What is the Content Refresh skill?
The Content Refresh skill is how Moonrank's Writer Agent repairs decaying pages: confirm the decline is real, diagnose whether it's staleness, an intent shift, stronger competitors, or self-cannibalization — then apply the fix that matches, keeping every passage that still earns impressions.
It's written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to run your own refresh sprints, hand it to whoever owns organic maintenance, or let the Writer Agent find the decaying pages and ship the updates.
Downloading the playbook is free with a Moonrank account. Watching your pages for decay and refreshing them before the traffic is gone is what the Writer Agent does continuously.
See it in action
“Our best guide went from position 3 to position 9 in six months. Do we rewrite it?”
Not a rewrite. The diagnosis: the SERP shifted from long guides to comparison tables, and two of your seven H2s carry 80% of the page's remaining impressions. The refresh keeps those two sections untouched, replaces three stale sections with a comparison table answering the new intent, updates 11 screenshots from two product versions ago, and rewrites the title and answer paragraph. Check-in is set for five weeks out — historically that page moves within four.
From input to fix list
- 1
You point at the sliding page
The URL, plus its query and position history over the last 6–12 months.
- 2
Moonrank diagnoses the decay
Staleness, intent shift, stronger competitors, or your own newer page cannibalizing it.
- 3
It plans the matching fix
What gets kept because it earns impressions, and what gets rewritten, added, or removed — with reasons.
- 4
It ships and schedules the check
Surfaces refreshed, reindexing requested, and a check-in date logged 4–6 weeks out.
Everything it checks
Decay confirmation
Clicks and position versus the page's peak, with seasonal dips separated from real decline.
Four-cause diagnosis
Staleness, intent shift, outcompeted, or cannibalized — each with its own fix.
Keep list
The headings and passages preserved because they still earn impressions.
Change plan
Sections rewritten, added, or removed — each with the reason attached.
Surface refresh
Title, meta description, direct-answer paragraph, dates, and internal links.
Measured follow-up
An honest modified date, a reindex request, and a check-in 4–6 weeks out.
When to reach for it
- Reclaim rankings on pages that are sliding quarter over quarter.
- Fix stale facts, prices, and screenshots before they cost trust.
- Respond when a SERP changes shape and your page didn't.
- Stop two of your own pages from cannibalizing each other.
- Run refresh sprints on the pages with proven demand first.
