What is the Content Gap skill?
The Content Gap skill is how Moonrank's SEO Agent plans content from evidence: pulling every keyword your real search competitors rank for, removing what you already hold, and clustering what remains into pages worth creating — with the vanity traffic cut out.
It's written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to run your own gap analysis, hand it to an agency as a brief, or let the SEO Agent pull the data and return the plan.
Downloading the playbook is free with a Moonrank account. Re-running it as competitors publish, and feeding the plan straight into your content calendar, is what the SEO Agent does for you.
See it in action
“Our main competitor gets three times our organic traffic. What are they ranking for that we aren't?”
They rank top 20 for 1,860 keywords you don't touch. After cutting careers pages and queries with no buying intent, that's 340 keywords in 22 topic clusters. Six clusters are weak coverage — you have a page, it ranks 25–40 — and those come first. The top true gap is a comparison cluster worth about 5,400 searches a month that three of your four competitors already rank for.
From input to fix list
- 1
You name your competitors
Your domain plus two to four sites that actually rank for your queries — not just brands you watch.
- 2
Moonrank pulls both keyword sets
Every top-20 keyword per competitor, with volume and position, subtracted against yours.
- 3
It clusters and qualifies the gap
Keywords become topic clusters, and anything the business can't convert gets cut.
- 4
It returns a sequenced plan
Pages to create or fix, ordered by volume, commercial fit, and competitor validation.
Everything it checks
Competitor keyword pull
Every query each competitor ranks top 20 for, with volume and position.
True gap vs weak coverage
Missing pages separated from pages that exist but rank 20+ — different fixes.
Topic clustering
Keywords grouped into the page that would win them, not a flat list.
Commercial qualification
Clusters with no path to revenue cut before they reach the plan.
Multi-competitor validation
Demand confirmed by two or more competitors ranking, not one outlier.
Sequenced content plan
A priority order with the reason for each ranking written in one sentence.
When to reach for it
- Plan next quarter's content from competitor data instead of brainstorms.
- Explain exactly where a rival's organic traffic comes from.
- Find the buyer vocabulary your product-led content misses.
- Separate pages to create from pages to improve before briefing writers.
- Cut vanity keywords from a plan before they burn the budget.
