Rank Tracking skill
The playbook Moonrank's SEO Agent uses to set up rank tracking that answers whether the strategy is working — segmented, deduplicated, tied to pages — and stays quiet the rest of the time.

What is the Rank Tracking skill?
The Rank Tracking skill is how Moonrank's SEO Agent turns rank data into decisions: a curated keyword set mapped to pages, segments where trends actually show, 14-day confirmation rules that kill the noise, and alerts only when something real moves.
It's written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to rebuild your own tracking, or let the SEO Agent set up the segments, watch the positions, and send the weekly digest.
Downloading the playbook is free with a Moonrank account. Watching positions daily so you only hear about confirmed moves is what the SEO Agent does for you.
See it in action
“We track 500 keywords and I still can't tell my CEO if our rankings are improving. Fix this.”
412 of the 500 are near-duplicates or zero-impression queries — cut to 88 keywords in 6 segments, each mapped to its page. Set up like this, the read is clear: your comparison segment is up from average position 14.2 to 8.6 over 28 days, your feature-page segment is flat, and 3 keywords silently swapped ranking URL to the blog — which is why those conversions dipped.
From input to fix list
- 1
You provide keywords and pages
The keyword set, the page each one should rank with, and the market to track.
- 2
Moonrank curates and segments
Duplicates collapsed, dead queries cut, the rest grouped by topic, intent, and funnel stage.
- 3
It baselines and watches
Starting positions recorded, 7-day averages trended, moves confirmed over 14 days.
- 4
It reports only what's real
A weekly digest of confirmed moves, URL swaps, and segment trends — and silence otherwise.
Everything it checks
Keyword curation
The set capped to what's tied to revenue or strategy — 50 that matter over 500 that don't.
Keyword-to-page mapping
Every keyword assigned its intended URL, so a ranking swap gets caught.
Segment structure
Topic, intent, and funnel-stage groups where trends are actually visible.
Deduplication
Near-variants collapsed so one keyword isn't counted ten times.
14-day confirmation rule
Only moves that hold two weeks count — daily wobble never reaches you.
Three-case alerting
Confirmed top-10 drops, ranking-URL changes, and whole-segment moves. Nothing else.
When to reach for it
- Answer 'are rankings improving?' with a trend instead of a shrug.
- Stop stakeholders reacting to every daily wobble.
- Catch Google swapping which page ranks before conversions dip.
- Cut a bloated 500-keyword tracker down to the set that matters.
- See a strategy working at segment level while single keywords bounce.
